Ice Storm 2018

Ice Storm 2018

By all accounts, Butterfly Ridge picked up about a quarter-inch of ice Tuesday night February 6, 2018.  Fortunately we came away with only minor damage (a couple of toppled trees).  More importantly, what impact will this storm have on the butterflies?  Most likely none or possibly even a positive benefit.  Ice serves as an insulator.  So even if a butterfly chrysalis is covered by ice, the chrysalis will remain roughly 32 degrees even though the surrounding temperature may in fact drop into the teens.  A covering of ice or snow on the ground and plants is actually far better for our winged friends than for them to have to face down brutal temperatures without the insulation that this precipitation provides.  Fret not, our Ohio butterflies are designed to survive these harsh conditions
